When you think about eco friendly fitness options, golf may not be the first activity that comes to mind. Golf courses, with their immaculate grounds and abundant golf carts, are not exactly models of conservation. Even the equipment a golfer uses to play 18 holes can be wasteful. Enter Dixon golf balls. Dixon Earth and Eco Distance balls are a bold attempt to clean up one of the major tools of the game, but would the new balls sacrifice our tester Matt's game? Here's what happened when we asked a four-handicap to try a new ball that is equally concerned with performance as it is environmental impact.
Hole in One (+)
- Made from a proprietary polymer, the core of the balls is made from completely renewable resources.
- Both the Dixon Earth and the Eco Distance balls are made from recycled materials; they also come packaged in 100% recycled materials.
- Overall, both balls provided similar performance in terms of distance, spin, feel, workability and durability.
- The distances achieved with the Dixon golf balls were equal to, if not a little better, than most traditional distance golf balls our tester has tried.
- They have a very good alignment aid for use when lining up putts. The feel is better than most two-piece golf balls and as soft as many three-piece golf balls.
- Both Dixon balls spin fairly well on full iron shots and were able to hold the green pretty well. You can definitely control the Dixon balls on full shots into a green.
- The ability to move the ball right and left can be done fairly easily with the Dixon balls.
- Dixon is thinking through the environmental impact of the whole product lifecycle of their product, from material sourcing to after the ball is spent. Golfers that are finished using their Dixon balls can return them to Dixon (based in Arizona) via a pouch provided by the company in the packaging. Mail the balls back, and the company will recycle your old balls and give you a $1 discount for every ball returned on your next purchase.
- The cost is $39.95 per box of 12, which is right down the fairway between the super cheap and the ultra expensive golf balls.
The 18th Hole
Dixon clearly makes a ball that is solid in both performance on the greens and in the green industry. In no way does the "green construction" of the golf ball limit its performance. In fact, Dixon's construction methods have created a golf ball that seems to out-perform most competitors' golf balls in the same ball category. Available online, or at select retail stores, Dixon's tag line says it all: Improve the world, improve your game.
