MESA, AZ -- Going green on the green!

A Mesa company has created high performance eco-friendly golf balls, free of heavy metals.

"We had PGA partners test it and it got a 98 percent approval rating which is one of the highest ratings ever given for any golf ball," said William Carey, CEO of Dixon Golf.

Carey said an estimated 200 to 300 million golf balls are thrown away in the United States yearly.

So as an incentive to recycle, Dixon Golf will give golfers $1 off a new ball when they trade in an old Dixon golf ball.

Golfers will also get a 50 cent credit for trading in other brands.

Carey said the old golf balls will be recycle for other products, like artificial turf and playground equipment.

The company is currently looking to make a putter out of golf balls.
